On a cold winter day in central North Dakota, this West River valley stopped me long enough to let the focus slip—and that’s when it said what it needed to say.

On a cold, frosty winter day in Central North Dakota, I set out with my camera, eager to capture the quiet beauty of the season. The valley along the West (Missouri) River immediately drew me in—its sweeping curves, frost-laden grasses, and the muted winter light creating a subtle, almost painterly scene. I experimented with composition, moving between angles and perspectives, before deciding, almost on a whim, to deliberately rack the focus. The resulting image transforms the landscape into something ethereal and abstract, emphasizing mood and atmosphere over detail, and it remains one of my favorite photographs to date—a quiet, frosty meditation on place, light, and the unexpected magic of experimentation.

Out on a cold, frosty winter day in central North Dakota, I went wandering with a camera. This valley along the West (Missouri) River stopped me long enough to slow down and really look.

I played with the composition, then finally let it drift out of focus—and that’s when it clicked. It’s still one of my favorites.

Around here, anything west of the Missouri is just called West River. It’s rough, spare, and quietly beautiful.
